As a former Dental Hygienist, I realized that I wanted to continue providing patients an evidenced-based, personalized approach that was beyond the scope of the oral cavity. With that said, I embarked upon a career change and I am now a fourth-year medical student living in New York City.

How to Match Into your #1 Top Choice Residency Program !

Let me first tell you, board scores aren’t everything, so don’t be discouraged from applying to reach programs and don’t ever sell yourself short!

The most important thing for matching your top choice program is creating a sales pitch of the short and long-term goals and naming three things that your future residency has that align with those goals.

Next it’s networking by attending every open house or webinar and getting on the radar of these programs by asking questions or following up to thank speakers.

After words, you should find a point of contact at the program in tactful way that you can express your specific short and long-term goals.

Lastly, the most important thing you need to establish when speaking one on one with program representatives whether it be program directors or residents is your particular leadership abilities, experience and show them how much it would be a great addition to the program.

Have you ever experienced countertransference?

Countertransference is the emotional reaction from the clinician to patient or client tied to feelings they’ve experienced reminding them of a specific person, place or time. Sometimes I forget how jaded medicine can make you. I often forget how abnormal it is to see sick and dying people on a daily basis when compared to professions outside of healthcare.

I encounter patients daily that remind me of my friends and family members. The line of professional patient relationship and countertransference empathy is sometimes blurred. Of course you always want to go above and beyond for your patience but sometimes but it’s still a delicate balance of doing the best that you can and not over exhausting yourself because there’s only so much that can be done.

Continuing to work within this delicate balance and maintain a good work lifestyle balance.

Bye Bye NYC - I’m officially a Massachusetts res

Bye Bye NYC - I’m officially a Massachusetts resident. Bittersweet day at the DMV turning in my New York License 😩. New York was a great 12 years but it’s upward and onward to new beginnings in my native New England. I’ll miss the 24 hour deli, delicious $1 pizza, NY swag and attitude, taxi hailing, best Thai food and my gorgeous license photo haha. Until next time ✌🏾

When you finally make it to campus to touch the iconic boot of Founder John Harvard for Good luck 🎉👏🏾.

The irony is Harvard was founded in 1638, a time when my ancestors were enslaved and forbidden formal education and literacy to now becoming a medical doctor speaks volumes.

Keep going! You belong in the rooms they tried to close on you!

Never forget!

The perks of residency life, well mine at least ☺️:

♦️I get a paycheck once a week every week.

♦️I’m only an hour away from my family so I can see them more often. I’ve seen my family more in residency that I’ve seen in four years of medical school.

♦️I live 7 minutes drive away and only fill my gas tank once a month 😊

♦️My program is super supportive and has unlimited access to resources to pursue any career interest.

♦️My co-residents have a great team dynamic.

♦️I live alone and have the apartment to myself so I can really engage in self-care and I have so much more space than I had in New York City.

♦️I found a Dominican salon and I will be utilizing it because Lord knows natural hair is a lot to maintain especially with the busy schedule

♦️Word on the street is Boston is a great place for single black women so heyyy future husbae 😂😆

The irony of being in healthcare is that while you sacrificed so much to dedicate yourself to nurturing and sustaining the life of others, your own health begins to fall by the wayside.

As someone who lives to promote self-care and making time for self, I can admit that I’ve always been on “go mode” and often put some of my priorities aside. Sometimes it was for the benefit of academics and also for preserving the health of close people around me. But, in life you’ll learn that putting yourself first isn’t selfish but rather noble.

You should always prioritize yourself before anyone else. I’m glad to be taking a few days off from work although I wish it was in better circumstances but I’m prayerful and hopeful that I will be back up and running to my full potential. Thanks for everyone who checked in on me this past week. Let’s push through, power on and pedal forward the best way we know how ! 😊♥️ #residencylife #residencyprogram #medicinelife

Storytime: Apartment hunting miracles.

When I was planning on moving to the Boston/Cambridge area, I had viewed a couple of apartments and I wanted to make sure I had an apartment that would be within 10 minutes of the hospital for residency and I also wanted to live in an apartment complex that would have a lot of amenities including a gym, pool and lounge space that would be more conducive to meeting people and socializing since I was new to the area. I was actually pretty shocked and surprised at how expensive and almost close to New York City rental costs were in Boston. I had found this dream apartment online that showed a very hip and happening social scene with restaurants, bars, shopping centers, movie theaters and so much more and I instantly fell in love with it. I went to tour this apartment and I loved it so much BUT, the available apartments at the time were totally out of my budget so I had to decline.

Afterwards, I went on an apartment hunt again and found a different apartment that was still pretty pricey but within my budget, although the space wasn’t so huge.

Then, two months later, I got an email. It was from my dream apartment complex and they told me that they have a unit available that was within my budget!! I jumped on that application so quickly and here I am.

Look at God !

So excited to finally fully unpack and furnish this place to make it homey since I’ll be here for a minimum of 3 years 🙏🏾💗

Living life to fullest; the only way I know how. 🤷🏾‍♀️💃🏾

I’m happy in real life, even if I don’t post a

I’m happy in real life, even if I don’t post all the joys on social media.

Don’t get me wrong I love sharing bits and pieces of my life like the triumphs and failures as a means of motivation and inspiration but I also feel that sometimes we become too engulfed in this app that we forgot that real life blossoms so much more outside these photo squares and likes.

I’ve never done any of this for “fame or followers“ but entirely as a creative outlet that doubles as a helping hand to someone in need of mentorship or uplift.

Because real life is so much more delicate and precious than a filter or like will ever be, I have decided to scale my content and moderate it to the intensity that I feel is best. If I want to post more, I will. If I’m too exhausted , you’ll get some static posts in a week...or so. My stories are still pretty active so catch me on there. As always, slide in my DMs with any questions, commentary to chat about- I’ll be thurr. ☺️

Such a much needed vacation. I’ll be photo dumping all week to continue basking in the excellence of it all.

First of all, the hospitality in Mexico is truly unmatched and I’ll definitely be returning ♥️

Thanks for all the congratulations, well wishes and support. I never realized the true depths of how much sharing my story impacted others until your comments shared recently. I’m humbly honored and privileged to share in this space.

I have God to thank for ALL of it. The fears, the tears, the sleepless nights, the disappointments, the trauma, the love, the faith, the support, the blessings have all culminated to this very point in my life and it’s all so emotional.

This is for my family.
This is for Liberia 🇱🇷.
This is for the patients in underserved communities crippled by systemic racism.

Will I be leaving New York City, the place I’ve called home for the last 10+ years?

We’ll find out tomorrow during Match Day !!!

Tomorrow is the monumental day when medical students finally discover the hospital they will be training at in their designated specialty for a minimum of three years.

It’s been a long time coming although it feels like just yesterday I was an 18 year old New Englander transplanted into The Big Apple with dreams of pursuing an entirely different career path.

Little did I know that my career as a dental hygienist would spark a career transition into becoming a medical doctor. My love of science, mystery solving and compassionate patient care led me here. And boy oh boy was it a crazy, wild ride !

Absolutely no regrets.

So many life lessons learned and I can fully reflect and see the amount of personal, spiritual and professional growth I’ve experienced and I’m so proud.

No matter where this residency process takes me, I know it’ll be exactly where I was meant.

God don’t play about me so I’m ready to see what He has in store for His obedient, sometimes stubborn and bratty yet supremely grateful and loving child.
