10 Types of Study Music for the Ultimate Focus and Concentration

    by winnell January 2, 2021
    written by winnell

Music has been a universal source when you want to attain the focus and concentration you desire to study. However, what is the best music for the ultimate study concentration and why?  Generally, music has been a source for many artists in discovering their true colors and motivation to mark their accomplishments. Moreover, scientifically proven evidence can be found in maintaining and improving the individual’s personal capacity in attaining their desired level of focus.

As a busy medical student, I personally opt for playlists on Apple Music or the many options provided for study music on Youtube. Here, I present you with tips to explore music to increase your attention span while studying.

    Background of Study Music

“Earworm” was instituted in 1979 by therapist Cornelius Eckert. It happens when a piece of the music stalls out in your mind for an all-inclusive timeframe, leaving you unable to tune it out. Coincidentally, this is also one method of improving your memory, which is the reason some language courses are set to a melodic example of ear-loving songs. Some even propose that the advantages do not rely upon the type of music you tune in to, but instead how viably your mind locks in to the tune of the melody.

A few investigations lately have connected music, memory, and feeling. To back this case, Petr Janata directed two examinations to demonstrate that music, memory, and feeling are connected. His underlying investigation found that “music fills in as a strong trigger for recovering recollections.” During his subsequent examination, Janata took Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of students’ cerebrums as he played famous tunes from their adolescence and young years. “After each passage, the subject reacted to inquiries concerning the tune, including if it was natural, how pleasant it was, and whether it was related with a specific occurrence, scene or memory” (UC Davis). This examination uncovers studying while at the same time tuning in to music is an exceptionally useful practice.

Ever asked why it is simpler to retain the verses to a melody than the occasional table of contents? That is because your brain searches for examples to retrieve, review, and cycle the data. There is a similar motivational force to explain why music makers consistently put a snare in their tunes, owing to what is also known as the earworm or appealing piece.

    Why Choose Study Music?

What does Spotify, Pandora, iTunes, and YouTube have in common? On the off chance, they are a portion of your number one go-to sites to hear your favourite music hits for your daily dose of energy and motivation due to the ambient attributes of the melodic sounds. Did you know that concentrating on the correct type of music can cause you to feel less stressed, more engaged, and might triple your productivity ? Simply put, it is makes you feel content and more focused.

Let’s be honest, nobody likes to study. In any case, how cool is it that music can be exactly what you need to get past the books while making you more focused, productive, and more relaxed? Pretty cool, isn’t it? Need to hear more? Sit back, get your headphones, and figure out how concentrating on the correct type of music might be something other than what your ears wanted to hear, but instead what your body needs. Explore and discover a portion of these tips to figure out how to create the best study playlist that suits your style, personality, and character.

Benefits of Study Music for Concentration

Do you tune in to music while you study, or do you incline toward absolute quietness? The jury is out on which is better since everybody is unique. Nonetheless, a few research theories are demonstrating that tuning in to the correct type of music can place your psyche into study mode.

Here is a portion of the advantages of checking out the correct tunes:

    • Loosening up the mind
    • Building focus
    • Reducing interruptions
    • Improving focus
    • Improving execution in high-pressure circumstances, for example, mid-terms and finals week

    Study Music Genres

Music is a cosmos language, and everybody is unique and distinct in their preferences of this cosmos. What calms one individual may drive the other one to pull their hair out. Since we as a whole have various musical inclinations, it is no wonder why you are likely to ponder which kind of music is ideal for you.

With regards to decision-making, all music is not made equivalent. Analysts found that the best music for relaxation—paying little heed to type—had a predictable beat with a consistent, monotonous heartbeat, and was played at “coffeehouse” levels. But I have done the homework for you with some recommended classifications and instances of every style that may help put your mind at ease and shift your mood.

    For starters, consider:

    • Alpha wave music: The alpha wave music style is one that ranges from 8-13 Hz. Increasing alpha waves serve to create an ambient energy that stimulates your brain with relaxation and reduce stress.
    • Solo piano tracks: Solo piano tracks are used to ensure the serene background to accompany a voice or an instrument. This can help provide an uninterrupted harmony for your mind.
    • Baroque Music: This is a type of western music composed between 1600s and 1700s. The unique characteristics of baroque music include vitality, drama, tension, emotional exuberance, and heavily ornamented music.
    • Lo-fi (low fidelity) Music: This type of music was created as a result of the original errors that occurred during the recording process. It is a soft and soothing sound that safeguards your ears from the harsh world outside.

    Classical Music for Study

Before you dismiss this style of music as “not your thing,” reconsider the following to merit an attempt to be on your list. You have likely heard about Mozart, one of our history’s most prominent classical music composers. However, have you heard about the Mozart Effect? A collection of studies discovered that tuning in to Mozart can cause an impermanent effect on your mind which increases the capacity of an individual to thoroughly consider the long haul and finding more conceptual answers for coherent issues.

The hypothesis that initially connected music with fixation was named “the Mozart Effect.” Since the focal point of that review was classical music, numerous students anticipate using classical study music as their “go to”. Another music phenomenon came about known as the Blur Effect, which had a great outlook similar to the Mozart effect. Generally, it was found that those who delightedly tuned in to the music were found to find focus and concentration, more adequately. It is no wonder even Albert Einstein was an enthusiast of Mozart! Considering this, do not feel obliged to turn your home into a symphony as the end all be all. Feel free to diversify your study playlist with music and genres you appreciate.

Honestly speaking, the Mozart Effect has little to do with tuning in to Mozart and more to do with tuning in to music that triggers a specific part of your mind.

    Jazz Study Music

Jazz is a shockingly misjudged music class. Numerous individuals will generally consider jazz a noisy, bustling genre with artists continually competing with their instruments at elevated volumes. While the jazz sound certainly can be described as spontaneous, thundering and complex, it has also given us many smooth tracks. Indeed, even jazz legends like Miles Davis and John Coltrane recorded some low octave tunes that make for extraordinary concentration music. Do some testing and see what works for you!

    Instrumental Music For Study

By this point, you have presumably seen a pattern with my music picks. Instrumental music for studying can be engaging because it is less diverting and open for interpretation. This is the reason instrumental or “post-rock” music is an incredible option to add to your playlist. Groups, for example, Explosions in the Sky and Polyphia demonstrate that snappy riffs can convey you far without an artist. These gatherings fabricate soundscapes around non-customary melodies and regularly start their tunes with moderate forms that ascent to a crescendo.

    Electronic Music for Study

This expansive style incorporates everything from moderate, environmental music to tantalizing electronic dance music (EDM). I understand this covers a wide scope of music but at the same time, that is somewhat the point. Electronic music has gotten extremely famous among college age students as of late and the good news is that it can serve both leisure and scholarly pursuits. Be sure to check out this Ambient Electronic Spotify playlist, which incorporates almost 77 hours of music! YouTube likewise has a huge load of extraordinary channels, for example, Chillhop Music, which has live radio playlists for study.

    Longterm Benefits of Study Music

In a busy semester, the physical and emotional pressure on students can run insanely high. This is an ideal time to audit your class notes with using study music. Did you know that music has been documented and demonstrated to help decrease blood pressure ? The University of Maryland Medical Center uncovered that students should “tune in to music as it has been evidenced to play a role in reducing blood pressure amongst people with and without chronic health conditions. Research also found that tuning in to relaxing music can lower heart rate and anxiety amongst patients with cardiovascular conditions” (UMD Medical Center). This assertion uncovers the ground-breaking impact that music can have on the human body. I can surely attest to this as I have powered through women empowerment anthems from the likes of Beyoncé prior to presenting a poster or research presentation and received many praise for my performence.

Music is an alternative approach to shifting your mood and fortifying your determination. Individuals frequently turn to the music they can identify with as it causes them to manage pressure and forego tension. Thus, if schoolwork has got you bogged down, it may very well may be a smart move to tune in to your latest radio station, Youtube or streaming platforms. Not only will it help you focus on your studies, but it will likely help to optimize your heart health while putting you in the learning mindset.

    Study Music for Relaxation

Anxiety can turn into a devastating cycle among students and their reading material. In what capacity can students overcome it? How about we imagine you were offered a free massage during each presentation for the span of your school years. But instead of the calming physical touch, imagine your ears transmitting a harmonic melody that soothes your mind. While the massage may be an idealistic goal, a simple relief provided via headphones or speakers is all you need. Fortunately, this is promptly accessible to students all over the world. According to an article in USA Today, one study found that “music’s impact on tension levels is like the impact of getting a back rub”. That’s right students, make sure your earbuds are always close by. You will see how easily the tranquillity and stillness absorbs into your study mantra.

A study conducted by Cambridge University demonstrated that hip-hop music provides an elevating impact on the mood of its audience members that can help them acknowledge, oversee, and manage psychological wellness issues. There is more than one classification of rap, so locate the one that best suits your interests and reward your brain power!

Perhaps, one of the most convincing motivations to use music during a study session is because music is demonstrated to help improve psychological execution. Fundamentally, music helps your mind work! “Mood melodies may upgrade execution on psychological assignments. One study found that music permitted test takers to finish more inquiries in the time allocated and find more correct solutions. The later study revealed music improves psychological capacity dependent upon whether the music initially improves an individual’s passionate state”. This proves that music can drive you into a state where you are more inclined to complete tasks in a desirable manner simply because the implementation satisfies your psyche.

Melodic action fills in as an intellectual exercise for the mind which trains it for additional difficulties later. In this manner, individuals who have melodic preparation have been said to experience the ill effects of degenerative illnesses like Alzheimer’s Dementia. In any case, you do not need to be a specific age to reap the benefits of music. Whether you are a child or senior citizen, you can begin exercising your mind now. If you are a student, it is vital that you secure your #1 music device, platform and headphones for a convenient study session.

    Create a Study Music Playlist

The supporting evidence of the enormous benefits of music for concentration and focus and cannot be understated for any study period. You should make strategic choices to select the sounds that satisfy you. There are tons on study music on Youtube that I will happily link below.

Here are a few hints for making your playlist:

    • Make your playlist ahead of time so you are not scavenging to locate another tune at regular intervals
    • Keep your playlist to around 40-50 minutes—this is an extraordinary suggestion to take a study break when it is finished. Besides, it causes you to plan your study meetings to meet your fixation level.
    • Try not to tune in to the radio. The discourse between radio characters and plugs can be diverting.
    • Tuning in to music at a moderate volume level is ideal

With the new semester commencing, it is an ideal time to begin making your playlist. Be sure to explore your options. I have provided a few links to study music playlists on Youtube to get started.

    Cheerful tuning in!

That program was pivotal in allowing me to take first year medical school classes in a one-year Masters program and showed me that I was more than prepared to excel as a medical student. There are many different reasons why you should pick a special masters program versus a post bacc program. This blog explores those reasons. Can you easily forgive ? In this last post of my Can you easily forgive ?

In this last post of my medicine and miracles series #medmiracles , I want to discuss the concept of forgiveness.

Forgiveness is something I definitely struggle with as a Christian. Through my groundwork in scriptures and devotionals, I’ve learned that forgiveness is something of the spirit and what makes it so hard is that our fleshly nature to hold grudges is solely due to the psychology of the hurt your brain won’t forget .

I’ve had trouble forgiving people who have done me wrong but I actively work on that. I also have problems with forgiving myself.

I’ve even replayed mistakes in my medical journey of the should’ve could’ve would’ves. I have no regrets and I appreciate the torturous journey because it has built my character and prepared me to be a resilient person open to change and growth.

forgiveness should have no conditions. forgiveness is for yourself so that your heart can truly heal. Forgiveness will free you from walking around harboring malicious intent and having uneasiness within you. Remember Forgiveness isn’t forgetting.

A true sign of forgiveness is even when you remember their faults and offences, you say in your heart and to your mind, ‘God’s grace is bigger than what you did to me and how you made me feel’. - Kanyao Tavonga

Forgiveness is for your peace. It is important because just as Jesus sacrificed his life to forgive our sins we should honor the same for others and especially ourselves.

Thanks for following me through this series! ♥️♥️♥️

Continuing with my Medicine & Miracles series #medmiracles, let’s discuss.

The OBGYN said this to me and not the patient but still I was shocked. My eyes widened, jaw dropped as I stood there debating about whether I should combat her choice words. It was my first week of OBGYN rotation and also being a third year medical student, I wasn’t sure if it was even worth having this religious, ethical debate.

So I didn’t.

I kept my thoughts to myself but I knew I would one day share it publicly to open a larger discussion.

After age 35, pregnancy is more difficult because of less frequent ovulation. Also, women 35-45 have a 20-35% chance of miscarriage, compared with women under 35 that average a 15-20% chance of miscarriage, according to the American Pregnancy Association.

Yet and still miracles can happen despite research and statistics of associated risks.

So, what are your thoughts on OBGYN reproductive medicine experts vs having miracle babies ? #obgyn #obgynlife #medicalstudentlife #medicalschoollife

Should Doctors be allowed to refuse care to LGBTQI Should Doctors be allowed to refuse care to LGBTQIA patients based on religious beliefs ?

In this Medicine & Miracles #medmiracles post, let’s dissect this further.

The LGBTQIA individuals remain a historically marginalized community in society and the medical field, which has led to many disparities.

Many of these disparities include higher incidences of cancer, heart disease and sexually transmitted infections due to fear and lack of access to providers who will provide care.

In 2017, A study found that nearly 1 in 10 LGBTQIA individuals reported that a health care professional refused to see them in the prior year because of their actual or perceived sexual orientation. Nearly 3 in 10 transgender people reported that providers would not see them because of their gender identity.

Transgender individuals who have been denied care show an increased likelihood of dying by suicide and engaging in self-harm.

Moreover, there is scientific evidence supporting the biological basis for a spectrum of conditions that may involve gender diversity and dysphoria. In medical school we learn about a host of Endocrine conditions including but not limited to congenital adrenal hyperplasias, intersex , amongst others.

While some religious groups continue to condemn the lifestyle of members of the LGBTQIA community, with some suggesting conversion therapy, the American Medical Association and the American Psychiatric Association have outlawed such practices.

I would love to hear your thoughts below about the intersection of religion, science and providing care to the LGBTQIA community 👇🏾

Should doctors be able to perform physician assist Should doctors be able to perform physician assisted suicide? In continuing with my Medicine and Miracles series #MedMiracles, let’s discuss.

In ancient and modern times physician assisted suicide has been an option to certain patients with unbearable, incurable pain and suffering from a particular, often terminal disease. It is usually performed by dosing of a lethal injection or prescription medication as per the patient’s request.
Physician assisted suicide is legal in Colorado, Oregon, Hawaii, Washington, Vermont, Maine, New Jersey, California, the District of Columbia, one county in New Mexico, and is de facto legal in Montana.

The American Medical Association maintains firm on this particular issue stating : “Physician-assisted suicide is fundamentally incompatible with the physician’s role as healer, would be difficult or impossible to control, and would pose serious societal risks. Instead of participating in assisted suicide, physicians must aggressively respond to the needs of patients at the end of life”.

The current debate about legalization argues that it should be allowed to afford patient autonomy and their rights of determining their end of life care whether or not it leads to death.

Are ICU doctors playing God when they declare a pa Are ICU doctors playing God when they declare a patient brain dead or tell families to consider pulling the plug?

Continuing with my #MedMiracles series, let’s discuss this issue.

I’ve been working in the ICU for the past two weeks and I have seen this scenario more times than I can count. I’ve performed the special brain reflex testing to assess if brain function was active on a few of my patients. There are a lot of steps involved in this Brain death protocol but it often makes me think further. I’ve had families of patients who have told the doctor that they will continue to pray for a miracle and that they will not take the patient off of life support.

God can make many miracles but the science of Medicine creates algorithms that may go against that idea. In that case, I believe it’s important to honor and empathize the religious beliefs of patients and their family.

This was me a few months ago when many things started falling into place.

I restored my Faith and spiritual walk two years ago and I’m growing everyday. Because of this I wanted to introduce a new series called Medicine & Miracles #medmiracles to discuss the intersection of Faith and Medicine. I hope you’ll join in the discussion!

Back to the story...👇🏾

After receiving a less than ideal step 2 exam score this summer, I gave it all to God and had faith that he would see me through the residency interview process.

I was overwhelmed by the amount of opportunities that started coming my way. I was networking with residents from some of my top choice programs, getting invites from Ivy League affiliated hospitals and I truly could not believe my eyes.

Match day is less than 3 months away but I’m still grateful for the opportunity to interview with many of my top programs. I’ve gotten everything I’ve prayed for and it has been a testament of my faith.

From the little girl who dragged her feet into church but loved the choir singing once I got there to the adult who seeks God daily, it has truly been a journey. We all have to start somewhere haha! Special shout-out to @gods.favorite23 @mjhayes_ for their enlightenment of relationship over religion because that concept definitely is overlooked by many.

Looking forward to this fruitful chat and hearing from all of you!

🤎Black Lives Matter and we are dying at a disproportionate rate. I know WAY too many people who have lost numerous family members to this deadly disease and I don’t want to lose any more going into 2021.
